What happens in sacrament meeting
Sacrament meeting is the main worship service for Latter-day Saints. It lasts about an hour and includes hymns, prayers, talks by members and the sacrament, in which bread and water are shared to remember Jesus Christ. At the Marblehead Ward, it begins at 9:00 AM on Sundays.
The order of the meeting
The meeting opens with a hymn and a prayer. A member of the bishopric then shares brief announcements and, when needed, asks the congregation to show support for people serving in new roles. Next comes the sacrament hymn, after which the sacrament is prepared and passed.
After the sacrament, members of the ward give short talks, usually two or three, with a musical number sometimes included. The meeting closes with a hymn and a prayer. You can check the digital program for the order of the current Sunday.
The sacrament
The sacrament is the heart of the meeting. Priesthood holders, often teenage boys, bless and pass small pieces of bread and cups of water through the rows. Members take them to remember Jesus Christ and renew their commitments. Visitors may take part or let the tray pass by. Either choice is fine, and no one will take notice.
The moment is quiet. Parents usually settle young children, and those who wish bow their heads and think about their week.
Who speaks, and what is unusual
The talks are given by ordinary members of the ward, not by paid clergy. You will hear personal stories as well as teachings from the scriptures. On the first Sunday of the month, many wards hold a testimony meeting instead, where members share what they believe in their own words. Check the ward calendar for the pattern here.
No offering is collected during the meeting. For an overview of the day, read the Church's guide on what to expect at church or our visit page.
If you have a young family
Families with children often sit near the back or the side so they can step out when needed. Children are welcome in the chapel throughout the meeting, and quiet activities are common. After the meeting, children go to classes appropriate to their age, so adults can stay for the next hour if they wish. Use the contact page if you would like someone to help you find your way.
