Bringing kids to church: Primary and nursery
Yes, children are welcome at every meeting. Latter-day Saint wards generally offer a nursery for toddlers and a class program called Primary for children ages 3 through 11. Families sit together during the first hour of Sunday worship, and children then go to age-based classes.
Sacrament meeting with children
Sacrament meeting begins at 9:00 AM, and children sit with their families in the chapel. It is normal for babies to fuss and for toddlers to wiggle. Parents often bring quiet books, crayons and small snacks. If a child needs a break, you can step into the hallway or a family area without any worry about disturbing anyone.
Nursery and Primary
After sacrament meeting, children split into classes. Nursery is for toddlers from about eighteen months to age 3, with play and simple songs. Primary is for ages 3 through 11, with a short lesson, music and activities that teach about Jesus Christ in a way that fits each age.
Church policy calls for at least two responsible adults in every class with children. Teachers are volunteers from the ward. If you are visiting, bring your child with you to the classroom, tell the teacher your child's first name, and stay as long as you both feel comfortable.
Helpful details for new families
If your child has an allergy, a medical need or a special learning need, send a note through the contact page before Sunday so the right people are ready. The ward calendar lists Primary activities and any change to the Sunday schedule, and the visit page covers parking and entrances.
Children can also enjoy the Church's Friend magazine, which has stories and activities online.
Questions before you come
Many parents ask whether their children will be expected to sit still or recite anything. They will not. Younger children are encouraged to listen, sing and color. If you would like a leader to meet you at the door on your first Sunday, mention it in your note through the contact page and we will do our best to arrange it.
