What happens at a Latter-day Saint baptism

A Latter-day Saint baptism is a short, simple service in which a person is fully immersed in water by someone who holds priesthood authority. Baptism is for people age 8 and older who understand the commitment, and guests who are invited are welcome to attend.

What baptism means

Latter-day Saints see baptism as the first step in following Jesus Christ and as a promise to keep his commandments. Immersion, being lowered fully under water and brought back up, represents leaving an old way of life and beginning a new one. It also reflects the example of Christ's own baptism.

Children raised in the Church are baptized at age 8 or later, after they have learned what the covenant means. Adults who join are baptized after meeting with missionaries or ward members and deciding for themselves. Babies are not baptized.

What the service looks like

Baptisms are often held in a font at a Church building and typically last under an hour. The service usually includes a hymn, an opening prayer, a short talk or two on baptism and the Holy Ghost, and the baptism itself. The person being baptized wears white clothing and changes before and after. Family and friends wait together while this happens.

A man who holds the priesthood speaks a short prayer, lowers the person into the water and raises them up again. Two other members stand as witnesses to confirm it was done correctly.

After the baptism

Usually on the following Sunday, the newly baptized person is confirmed a member of the Church and receives the gift of the Holy Ghost through a blessing given by the laying on of hands. Many families gather for refreshments afterward.

If you have been invited to a baptism, dress modestly and arrive a few minutes early. Learn more about the beliefs behind it through ComeUntoChrist or ask a question on our contact page. To learn about baptism for yourself, see the requests page.
